Why Your Upwork Account Was Suspended

In this article, you’ll learn about the reasons why Upwork can suspend your account.

The primary reason for the suspension is the failure to adhere to Upwork’s policies and payment terms. If that happens, it can result in immediate suspension and removal of your listings, which means no more income. But there are other reasons as well that can lead to a temporary or permanent ban from using their platform.

These include:

  • Violating any of their policies or terms of service
  • Harassing other users on Upwork’s site (for example, sending them unwanted messages)

Your Upwork Account Is Suspended By Mistake

If your account has been suspended by mistake, please contact Upwork Support as soon as possible. This can happen for a variety of reasons. For example, there may have been errors in your profile or application that a human moderator failed to notice.

Another possibility is that automatic systems are trained to identify suspicious behavior and sometimes they make mistakes when determining the difference between suspicious and normal activity.

Another reason why your Upwork account was suspended is if you violated one of our Terms of Service policies (TOS) or Community Guidelines (CG). Please review our TOS and CG carefully before contacting us about the status of your account so that we can help resolve any issues promptly!

You Violated Upwork’s Rules

To ensure that the freelancers and clients are able to work on Upwork in a safe and secure environment, the company has developed some rules and regulations for both parties. For example, you can’t use Upwork as your personal social media platform.

If you have an Instagram account and want to post about your life, please create one specifically for that purpose and don’t use your Upwork account for it.

The first rule involves working on Upwork itself: freelancers cannot hire other people from the site or pay them using any money brought in through their positions on the platform (this includes paying someone offsite).

The second rule involves creating accounts with multiple providers at once; this practice is not allowed by Upwork because it could lead to conflicts between two different companies over which one gets paid first when a client pays them both simultaneously via PayPal or credit card payment.

Options offered by each provider involved in such scenarios who both offer these features (eBay Inc., Square Inc., Google Pay Inc., Stripe Inc.).

You Didn’t Link A Payment Method

It’s important to add a payment method to your Upwork account in order to be paid for your work. We may also ask you to add a payment method if you want to bid on jobs. Adding a payment method is easy you can do it by going to Settings.

Payment Methods and clicking Add new card (or bank account). You can then enter your credit card information, or select an existing bank account (such as checking or savings) that you have linked with the account.

You Had More Than One Account

If you have more than one Upwork account, we will suspend both. We do this to ensure that freelancers aren’t violating the terms of our website by offering their services under multiple identities.

Unfortunately, there is no way to merge accounts into one if you’ve created more than one profile on Upwork (for whatever reason), then they will be closed and all projects associated with those profiles will be terminated.

If you didn’t realize that having multiple accounts was a violation until after the fact, don’t worry: we understand that sometimes people might think they can only sign up for an account once in order to access certain features or get help from customer service staff members who are only available through email support requests or direct messages via Twitter/Facebook/Google+.

If this happens to you then we encourage anyone reading these guidelines who feels like he or she might have accidentally violated our terms of service please reach out immediately so we can discuss options moving forward!

You Accepted An Invitation To Create A Second Account

You should not accept an invitation to create a second account. If you do, your primary account will be suspended and the second one locked. This applies to all Upwork accounts, including those with paid listings.

If you are invited as part of a team or project, it is best to decline the invitation and contact support@upwork.com for further assistance with verifying your identity in accordance with company policy. Also, note that we strongly discourage users from creating multiple accounts for any reason; doing so may result in immediate suspension of both accounts.

You Were Paid Outside Of Upwork

“Freelancers and clients can be paid only inside of Upwork. This is to protect both parties: freelancers are protected from disputes and scams, while clients are protected against payment fraud.”

Upwork makes it clear that they will suspend accounts if you work outside of the platform, even if you’re just answering emails or doing research together. The reason for this is that the site wants to keep its interactions between freelancers and clients in one place, which protects both sides.

You Promoted An Upwork Alternative Site

If you have been suspended from Upwork for promoting an Upwork alternative site, you may be surprised to learn that this is a violation of their Terms of Service.

Upwork has a zero-tolerance policy on this and will suspend your account if you are caught doing so.

If you are not familiar with the definition of “closed system”, it refers to an online marketplace that is proprietary, whereby no other website can compete with it in any way. Think about eBay or Amazon’s third-party sellers.

These sites have been around since the beginning of time, and they are the only places where people should sell products online (well…now I’m getting off-topic).

The reason why Upwork works so well is that it connects freelancers who won’t work with businesses seeking out contractors; this creates an ecosystem where both parties benefit from each other’s services.

This can’t happen if there was another website out there providing similar opportunities as Upwork does – thereby creating competition!

However, I understand that sometimes we get bored with what we’re doing at work it happens! Or maybe we just don’t like where our life has taken us? Well regardless of why someone would want to promote another website over ours, keep in mind that doing so could cost them their livelihoods forever!

Your Account Was Associated With Another Suspended Account

If you shared a computer with a relative, friend, or family member, this could lead to your account being suspended.

In these cases, Upwork will ask you to provide evidence that the other account holder did not use your credentials to create their own profile. If they cannot prove otherwise, they will likely be banned from using Upwork moving forward.

If this happens to you and it was legitimately not your fault (for example: if someone else used your computer without permission), then feel free to contact customer support. You may be able to have them restore access to your account after verifying that someone else used it without permission.

Your Upwork Account Can Be Suspended Because Of Many Factors

If you’re in this situation, it means that your Upwork account has been suspended. The suspension might be temporary or long term depending on the reason for it. The first thing to do is to determine the reason for your suspension and then choose an action plan to get back on Upwork as soon as possible.

If you know that you violated Upwork’s rules or policies and don’t see any way around what happened then there’s no point in appealing because nothing can change at this point anyway. If there is still some ambiguity around what happened, then it may be worth appealing the decision; otherwise, just wait until your account is reinstated by itself (usually after 30 days).

If none of these scenarios apply to your situation, then read on!

I Was Paid Outside Of Upwork; What Should I Do?

If an employer pays their contractor outside of Upwork or through an intermediary such as PayPal or Square, that payment is not considered payment from Upwork and therefore does not count towards the suspension time limits described above.

However, if a client meets all three criteria for violating our Terms of Service, then regardless of whether they paid through Upwork’s platform or directly to contractors via other channels like PayPal or Square the violation will still be deemed severe enough by our Trust & Safety team.

That its corresponding suspension period will apply regardless of whether payments have been made elsewhere since then (i.e., even though someone might have been paid through their bank account rather than any online service).

The bottom line here: If someone is paying contractors outside our platform either because they don’t want their data exposed publicly or simply because they’ve chosen not to then this doesn’t affect them negatively in any way shape form manner fashion whatsoever!
