How To Land Your Dream Job As Store Associate

If you’ve been looking for a job and are tired of sending out resumes in vain, there’s another way to get your foot in the door. I learned this from having worked as a store associate at several major retail stores over the years.

As an employee, I found that managers were always on the lookout for new people to hire and would often call me up to ask if any of my friends or family members might be interested in applying.

Although they weren’t actively hiring at the time when I applied myself, some managers have told me that they always have room for good employees who can do well even with limited training (usually because they have enough experience working elsewhere).

Get Past The Gatekeeper

The first step in landing your dream job is getting past the gatekeeper. If you don’t know who that person is, ask someone who does.

This person is likely a recruiter or HR representative. Find out as much as you can about them, including their name and title, and do some research on how they like to be contacted (email, text message, etc.).

Get past the gatekeeper by making sure they are aware of your interest in the position and why it’s exciting for you personally. Although this may seem obvious, if you don’t know who exactly has decided to hire for this position yet (or what criteria define an ideal candidate), then ask!

A lot of people fall into this trap: They assume that because they’ve got an interview with an employer or recruiter for a particular role at their company that there must be something about them that appeals directly to management/other interviewers but this isn’t always true!

It’s not uncommon for employers’ requirements for job listings not to match up perfectly with each other; so even if one manager believes he has found someone perfect for the role based on his knowledge alone (which might include personal preferences).

There could still be another manager involved who disagrees and thinks another candidate would be better suited and vice versa!

Review The Job Description

Write down all of the required skills and experience listed that you have, or can learn quickly. If it’s not on your resume, include how you would use those skills to help the company in your cover letter or during an interview.

Consider what other skills would be helpful for this job (e.g., computer literacy, leadership ability). If it’s not on your resume, include how you would use those skills to help the company in your cover letter or during an interview.

Send A Specific Letter About Why You Want The Job, Not Just Your Generic Resume

Send a specific letter about why you want the job, not just your generic resume.

It is not enough to send a standard cover letter with your resume and application.

If you want to stand out from other applicants, send an email or letter (it can be handwritten) that explains why you’re interested in the position at this particular store and why they should consider hiring you over others who are applying. Your cover letter should include:

  • Why do I want this job?
  • What makes me qualified for this position?
  • Why would I be a good fit for this company?

Write A Letter Of Interest In Addition To Your Resume And Application

In addition to your resume and application, send a letter of interest to the hiring manager. This will set you apart from other applicants and show that you’re interested in the position. Include:

Details about your experience (experience working in retail or customer service, etc.)

References (if any) who can speak on your behalf. These don’t have to be anyone famous; they just need to be able to attest that they’ve worked with or know you personally and can provide a reference for your character and work ethic.

Don’t Use Too Much “I” Language In Your Resume Or Cover Letter

You want to get a job, but you also want to stay humble. While it may seem more appealing to put your best foot forward and brag about all your wonderful qualities, this isn’t the best way to land an interview.

Instead, focus on achievements that match up with what the employer wants in their ideal candidate. For example: “I am a hard worker who always completes projects on time” doesn’t sound nearly as impressive as “I achieved 100% on my last performance review.”

9Never Lie On An Application Or Resume – Employers Always Verify Everything

Don’t lie to an employer (namely a recruiter) who is interested in hiring you. If they ask if you can work weekends and holidays? What are your plans during the summer? How often do you visit relatives out of town? Be honest with them.

The more answers they get from their questions like these, the better they’ll know whether or not this job would be a good fit for both of us.

Don’t lie to me as your potential boss when I call references for our interview process either! It will only end badly for all parties involved if we find out that one of those references was lying about something important such as the credentials needed for this position.

Conclusion

The best way to land your dream job is by being prepared. The more you know about the company and its expectations, the better off you’ll be when it comes time for an interview.

Start by researching what they do, who their competitors are, what industry trends are impacting them today (or might impact them in the future), etc. When applying for an upcoming opening at a store near me?

Make sure it’s clear that you’re qualified based on your experience working with people – not just selling products!
