If you’ve ever dreamed of working as CTO for a company, but don’t know how to get there, this article is for you. I’ll share my own story and the tips that have helped me land my dream job. 

You’ve probably noticed that landing your dream job involves many steps and is often harder than it looks. That’s why I decided to write this guide: so that other people like you can make their dreams come true!

1. Dream Big

Your first step is to dream big. Begin by setting a goal and then work towards it. If you don’t know what you want, ask yourself what you don’t want this will give you a better idea of where your interests lie and how you can get there. 

For example, if I asked myself “What don’t I want?” the answer would be something like “I don’t want to work in an office with more than 20 people.” 

This means that my ideal job is one that doesn’t have too many people in it, but also isn’t so small that I’m doing everything on my own! Once I’ve figured out what my ideal job looks like, the next step is figuring out where it exists (or doesn’t). For example:

  • Do other companies have these types of positions?
  • Where do they exist? In other countries or states? In different industries?

2. Do Your Homework

To ace your interview, you’ll need to do your homework. You should know the company, their industry and competitors, products, culture and problems they are working on solving in this particular market space. 

You should also be familiar with the people interviewing you either directly or indirectly through other employees.

You can use LinkedIn or Google search to get an idea of who works at a particular company before preparing for an interview there. 

This will help make sure that when interviewers ask questions about any one of these things during an interview process (which they probably will), you’ll be able to give thoughtful answers rather than simply saying “I don’t know.” 

In addition to knowing about specific organizations’ work within their respective industries (and how it compares with other players).

Prospective employees need to understand how customer needs to evolve as well as which technologies have been driving advancements within those markets since inception (or since some other point in history).

3. Talk To The People That Are In Your Dream Job

Now that you’ve identified your dream job, it’s time to talk to people who are currently doing it. You can use LinkedIn or Twitter to get in touch with someone in your target position and ask them a few questions about their role and what they like or dislike about it. 

Ask them how they got their current job, what they would do differently if they were to do it all over again, and what advice they have for someone trying to land on an entry-level position at the company.

4. Stay Focused

If you want to be a CTO, then it’s time to start focusing on what it means to be a CTO. If you haven’t already committed yourself to be the best and most qualified candidate, then now is the time.

The first step should be figuring out exactly what kind of company or project you want to work for. Look for opportunities in organizations that align with your core values and career goals and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! 

If anyone tries to discourage or deter you from this path (especially people who are more experienced than you), simply ignore them and keep moving forward.

5. Network With People You’d Want To Work With

Being a CTO requires a lot of work, but it’s also one of the most rewarding careers available. If you are interested in becoming CTO or Chief Technology Officer, don’t be afraid to reach out to people who have gone through similar experiences and ask them questions.

You need to know what the job is like, what the company is like, and whether or not you will enjoy working there. The best way to find out these things is by talking directly with someone who has been there before.

6. Get The Right Experience

Experience is everything in the job market. Without it, you may as well be applying for a role at Mcdonald’s and yes, I know what you’re going to say: “But my degree isn’t in computer science!” To which I respond: that’s great! 

You can learn how to code and get your first job as an entry-level developer while working on your bachelor’s degree or even after graduation.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been developing software since before computers were invented (or even since they were just invented). If you want a CTO role but lack experience, then go out there and get some! 

There are plenty of ways for people who have never done certain jobs before to gain experience without spending time doing them full time:

Teach yourself something new like SQL or Python by using online resources like CodeAcademy or Udacity. Find someone who will pay you to do freelance work related to what interests you and make sure they’ll give feedback on how well their project went.

Create projects on GitHub that showcase how many potential employers could expect from someone with your level of skill set.

Go out into the world and try stuff build prototypes; learn new languages; find customer support positions where being able-minded is enough (even if they don’t require specific skillsets).

7. Know The Company You Want To Work For

When you know a company well, you have a better chance of getting hired.

You may not be able to interview everyone on the team at once, but you should know who’s responsible for what and how they fit into the organization as a whole. Here’s who you should get familiar with:

The CEO and CTO are the two most important people in an organization. They set the tone for everything that happens within it. If you want to land your dream job as CTO, getting to know these two individuals is essential.

Know about their products and services. They shouldn’t matter too much if there aren’t any customers or even prospects.

But if there are, knowing how they’ve impacted them will help give context when discussing which technologies they’re using to solve problems or make lives easier (or vice versa).

8. Look For Trends And Green Shots

Your career is a marathon, not a race. So when you look for green shots, think in terms of trends and green shots rather than immediate opportunities.

You can see this with the current discussion around AI technologies and how they will transform industries. Many companies are looking to hire AI experts who can help them understand what’s possible and how they can use these technologies to transform their business models. 

If this is an area that interests you, it may be worthwhile to do some research into what companies are doing in this space and where there might be opportunities for growth if you become an expert yourself.

The same goes for your own company: Look at what’s happening inside your company as well as outside of it. 

When I was CTO at one point in my career, there were some interesting initiatives underway but no one was quite sure where things would go or whether those efforts would be successful or not the future was very uncertain! 

But as we started testing out our ideas, certain ones began showing promise and we were able to take advantage of those opportunities before anyone else did so that we could build up our capabilities faster than our competitors could catch up (and eventually surpass them).

9. Be One Step Ahead Of All Your Peers In The Industry

There are a few ways to stay on top of your game. First, follow industry leaders and influencers on Twitter or LinkedIn. You can also subscribe to their newsletters and read them every week. It’s a good way to get fresh ideas and stay in tune with what’s happening in the industry.

Another tip is connecting with professionals who work at companies that offer similar products or services as your own company. 

Ask them questions about their jobs and learn how they got there, so you can apply those lessons yourself when you want to expand into different industries or change roles within yours!

10. Start Something, Whether It’s A Project

Start a project. If you don’t have an idea, think of something you’re passionate about and start working on it. You can build anything from a web app to a mobile game, or even get started with hardware development. 

The goal here is just to get yourself (and your skills) out there into the world and show off what you can do.

Start a company. Even if it’s not in the same field as your ideal job, starting something new will give you real-world experience that will put you head and shoulders above other candidates who haven’t done this before in fact, it’s probably one of the most important things on this list! 

Plus, if there is one thing Silicon Valley execs love more than anything else in their lives besides money and power…it’s successful business owners!

Write something awesome and share it with people who care about what you have to say; whether that involves writing blog posts about technical topics or releasing podcasts or vlogs or whatever else floats your boat.

Just make sure there are plenty of links back to all those pages where potential employers can find out more about how amazing/smart/talented/brilliantly creative the person behind them IS (aka YOURSELF).

11. Focus On What Matters And Don’t Let Other People Tell You What Is Possible And Impossible

One of the most important things you can do is to focus on what matters and don’t let other people tell you what is possible or impossible. You are the CTO, so it’s your job to make that decision. The second thing is not to let people tell you what they want. 

Focus on what YOU want and where YOU want to go with your career, because ultimately it’s all about YOU!

Also remember that it’s about focusing on what matters, not focusing on everything else that might distract us from our path towards success. This requires good planning skills as well as proper time management which we’ll talk more about later on in this article series.

12. Don’t Settle For Less Than What You Want, Even If It Takes Longer!

As much as possible, don’t settle for less than what you want. This can be a hard rule to follow, especially when you have a deadline or need things to go right immediately. 

It is important to remember that if someone else tells you something isn’t possible, they may not know what they are talking about or they could be trying to discourage your efforts.

I am not saying that an employer can’t ask for unreasonable things from candidates and employees but I am saying that if this happens then find another job where things are more reasonable. 

It also does not mean that as an employee or candidate one should do anything illegal by any means because there are consequences for those actions too!

Don’t let other people tell YOU what YOU CAN’T DO!
