Writing a business plan can be one of the most exciting and rewarding milestones in a company’s life. But it’s also one of the hardest things to do well. I’ve written dozens of business plans, and I’m always amazed at how much there is to consider when writing one. 

Some questions seem obvious but aren’t easy to answer, as well as questions that send you into deep thought (and potentially panic) about where your company is headed. So today, I want to share some answers from our experience helping hundreds of entrepreneurs write their plans:

When I was in high school, I had an English teacher who told me (and probably everyone else) that he would never give us a test or assignment unless he also had a test or assignment for himself. 

He wanted us all to try our hardest so he could have something interesting enough for him to work on too and if we did well enough on our assignments, then we’d have something good enough for him as well. 

This isn’t an idea exclusive to teaching English; many people in many fields follow similar practices when they set out their own goals at work or home because they know how important it is not only to keep track of their progress but also to stay motivated along the way.

So what do YOU want out of business success? For example: Do you want more free time? More money? More control over your schedule? A sense of accomplishment from building something new from scratch? Financial security after years spent working under someone else’s watchful eye (or paycheck)?

And finally, everything you set as a goal should align with the vision for your company which means everything from the products or services offered to how customers interact with those offerings.

It can be easy to set unrealistic targets if you don’t have a plan in place first; some people may even fall into the trap of thinking they don’t need one! But having a good strategy upfront will help keep your efforts focused on what matters most during execution stages later down the line (which we’ll talk about soon).

This is a no-brainer, but you need to know your business. You need to know its goals and how they align with your market’s goals, and you should be able to describe how they differ. 

Know the competition and make sure that you can distinguish yourself from them in a meaningful way. Know who you are serving and why they would choose your product or service over others like it.

Finally, understand the finances of running a business: can we break even? Will we make money? What do those numbers look like? Doing this will help ensure that your plan is helpful for everyone involved in making decisions about its success you included!

There are no easy answers to these questions. Asking them can be intimidating, but also helpful in writing a business plan that makes sense for your company.

Each question requires some research and thinking about the best way to respond. These are not easy questions, but they’re necessary if you want your business plan to reflect what your company does best and how it fits into the marketplace.
