I don’t know how many times I’ve heard this question: “How can I become a successful copywriter?” While there is no one-size-fits-all answer, I know that the first step toward this goal is to accept who you are. If you’re not a writer, stop trying to be one. Copywriting isn’t for everyone, and that’s okay! In this article, we’ll look at why some people aren’t cut out for copywriting.

I Don’t Have The Time

You and I are not copywriters because we don’t have the time.

As a copywriter, one of my biggest clients was a [the company that makes people want to buy things (like books) and then gives them away]. 

But even though I was working with an incredible team, every day was still insanely busy: answering emails, editing written content, finding new opportunities for growth and improvement, and let’s not forget working on our projects! And don’t get me started on learning new skills and tools so we could keep up with the industry trends.

So if you’re wondering if it’s possible to be a full-time copywriter: Yes! But only if you’re willing to make some big sacrifices and there are plenty of other careers out there where you get paid more for less work in the same amount of time as being a full-time writer does take up most of your day (or week).

I Can Barely Write Anything

You can write, but you don’t know what to write about.

Even if you do manage to get started, it seems like every time you sit down at your computer and try to write something worthwhile, the words never come out right. You might even find yourself staring at the screen for hours without being able to produce a single sentence worth keeping.

I’m Not That Good With Words

I don’t have any skill in writing

I’m going to let you in on a secret: writing is hard. It’s harder than most people think, which is why they don’t do it. 

They can’t get passed the initial hump of learning how to use proper grammar and punctuation, or even how to spell. But if you want to be a good writer and not just a writer, but an excellent one you need to learn these skills. And then practice them until they become second nature for you.

I Never Studied Writing Before

You can learn to write by reading, you can learn to write by writing and you can also learn to write by listening to other people write. Sometimes, it’s easier for some of us to watch someone do something and then copy them or mimic them in some way. You can take a course or class on writing. There are many ways that you can get good at writing if you want to do so!

I Think It’s Too Late For Me To Start Writing

You can start writing at any age! You don’t need to be a certain age or have a certain amount of experience before you begin. You can start today, right now, right away even if you’re 80 years old and have never written a word in your life before. 

If you don’t believe me, just look at George Orwell (who was born in 1903) or William Faulkner (born 1897). Both of these authors started writing later in life and became famous for their work while they were still alive.

I Love Talking More Than Writing

Writing is a very solitary activity. It takes place in your head and on a page, away from the distractions of the world. Writing is also very different from talking. 

When you’re writing, you have to be as clear as possible so that people understand what you mean; when speaking, it’s okay to use more slang or slang terms because people will still get what you mean even if they don’t understand everything exactly right.

Writing takes time and effort and concentration! To write well takes patience and focus, which are two things many of us don’t have much of these days (especially those of us who grew up watching television). And if there is one thing I love more than anything else in this world? It’s talking and not just about my favorite movies and TV shows; I love talking about myself!

Writing Is Just Not For Me

Writing is not for everyone.

Writing is hard work.

Writing can be frustrating as hell.

The truth is, not all of us are born to be writers and I’m certainly not one of them. That doesn’t mean I don’t love writing or care about the craft of it, but rather that I’ve come to terms with my limitations: 

I’m much better at speaking than writing, and so when it comes time to put words on a page (or into my laptop), it takes me longer than most people would like or expect from a trained professional in this field.

This Is Not My Passion

I’m not a copywriter. I’m a business owner, and I’ve hired many copywriters in my time. Here are the things that make me different than most people who say they’re copywriters:

  • I don’t love writing

I enjoy it well enough, but if you asked me to come up with reasons why I like writing as opposed to other forms of communication, I’d be hard pressed to give any beyond the fact that it’s something you can do by yourself. 

The idea of sitting alone at a desk is appealing; being paid for it is great too but neither would be enough on its own for me to consider myself an enthusiast of this form of expression. 

For instance: when asked about my favorite authors, my mind goes blank because there’s no one whose work resonates with me more than anyone else’s does (which is not uncommon among writers). 

If anything stands out about what makes me different from other people who call themselves writers is that there isn’t anything special about them or their work it just happens to be something they enjoy doing regularly enough that they feel comfortable sharing their thoughts publicly through blogs or books or articles… etcetera!

Copywriting Is Just For The Pros

To put it simply, I believe that you and I can be copywriters.

You might be thinking: “Copywriting is just for the pros!” Well, actually no. Copywriting is a skill that anyone can learn. It just takes practice and a bit of patience. You don’t need to know how to write to become a copywriter; in fact, it’s better if you don’t when starting! 

A lot of people think that only certain types of writers can write great content but this isn’t true at all you’ll find that the best writers are ones who didn’t go through formal training or anything like that but still managed to master their craft through hard work and dedication over time.

It’s Not Meant For Me, And It’s Okay With Me

I was a copywriter for years. In two decades, I’ve written more than fifty million words in a row. Some of those words were “copy.” Most were not.

I don’t want to be a copywriter anymore because I love writing and I don’t want to work with people who are mean or manipulative or just bad at their jobs. 

This is a truth about me; it’s also true that some people like being around other people who are mean and manipulative, which makes them happy at the moment but can make them unhappy later when they look back on their lives and remember how much they hated being around such jerks all the time (and there’s nothing wrong with that). 

It doesn’t matter if those jerks were good at their jobs what matters is whether those jerks made your life better overall by being there for you during difficult times (which is something only you can decide), or if those jerks made your life worse overall by being so terrible at doing what they do (also something only you can decide).

People who want to be copywriters are not necessarily bad writers; they just think writing words on paper will help them get ahead in business faster than doing other things would help them get ahead faster still! Maybe this is true maybe not! Maybe another explanation would make more sense: Maybe these people have no idea what else they could do instead. 

Maybe there isn’t anything else out there besides writing that would interest them?

No One Ever Told Me To Write. Not Even Once

The world is full of writers, but not all of them know how to write.

If you’re reading this and wondering whether or not you can be a writer, then I’m going to tell you that the answer is yes. You can write. You just haven’t been taught how yet. And that’s okay! 

It doesn’t matter if it’s your first time trying to put words on paper (or screen) or if it’s been decades since your last attempt at writing something beyond an email or text message there are still things that need saying and there are always people who want those things said by someone else so they don’t have to do it themselves.

Writing Seems Boring And Lonely For Me 

Writing can be a lonely task. Some writers like to work in silence, or with the sound of rain falling outside their window. If you’re more of an extrovert and need some company while you write, try listening to music or having someone nearby who can keep you company while they read or do something else.

Writing can be boring at times. Once again, if this is happening it may help to have other things going on in your life that aren’t related to writing so that when it gets boring you don’t feel obligated to continue working on your content because other things are waiting for your attention elsewhere (like friends and family).
