Before you can start your freelance writing career, you need to figure out if it’s actually right for you. Some people love being their own boss. Others hate it.
But being a freelance writer isn’t just about whether or not you’re cut out to be self-employed—it’s also a matter of whether or not you’re cut out to be a content writer. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
Do I like to read? Can I write a lot and write fast? Do I have the discipline to work on my own schedule? Can I stay focused even when I’m working from home? Do I think it would be hard for me to do a job where I’m sitting in front of a computer most of the time? Is it easy for me to take direction and feedback from clients and bosses?

Choose your blogging platform. WordPress is the most popular platform for bloggers, but it can be difficult to set up if you’re not tech-savvy. The drag-and-drop website builder Wix makes it much easier for beginners to create an attractive site.
Choose your domain name. This should be short and sweet; something that people can remember easily. Avoid numbers and hyphens (such as my-personal-blog1234) or you risk people forgetting how to find you online.
Decide what you’re going to write about. Your blog should focus on one thing, so choose a topic that you can write about indefinitely without running out of ideas. For example, this blog focuses on freelance writing – but I could easily write about content marketing forever!
Start writing! Set aside time each day to write new content.

If someone tells you that they have an SEO secret or a trick to getting ranked on Google’s first page, run away fast! There is no such thing.

10. Join Freelance Writing Platforms
If you are a freelance writer and want to become a freelancer, then you will need platforms where clients will be able to find you.
There are many different platforms out there but some of the most popular ones include Upwork, Fiverr, LinkedIn, PeoplePerHour, and Freelancer.
The first platform I joined was Upwork, but since then I’ve created profiles on all the other platforms because it increases my chances of landing more jobs.
However, if you’re just starting out as a freelance writer then I recommend that you stick to just one platform to begin with until you have established yourself as a freelance writer and have gained some experience.
I’m going to give you a brief summary of each platform so that you can choose the one that’s right for you.
Upwork
This is by far the largest freelance writing platform in the world and it’s where I got my start. Upwork has thousands of jobs listed at any given time, but it tends to be more competitive than other platforms. I’ve seen jobs on Upwork with hundreds of applicants.
Fivver
Fivver is like a mini version of Upwork with fewer jobs posted. It’s not as popular as Upwork so there are fewer writers applying for jobs, which gives you a better chance at landing them. The downside to Fivver is that there are fewer jobs in general and some don’t pay as well as what you’ll see on Upwork.
Freelancer
Freelancer is another huge platform like Upwork, but it has a reputation for attracting low-quality clients who don’t want to pay much for your work. That said, there are still good clients on this site and because it’s less popular than other sites, there might be less competition for jobs here too.
People Per Hour
People Per Hour is a freelance writing platform that connects clients with freelancers. The good thing about this platform is that they have a wide variety of projects and you can filter through them to find what you’re looking for.
However, the thing I don’t like about People Per Hour is that they charge 20% of your earnings as a transaction fee. This means that you need to factor this cost into your prices.

11. Update Your Linkedin Profile
When you think of social media sites, LinkedIn probably isn’t the first one that comes to mind. But it should be! With more than 700 million members and counting, LinkedIn is a unique platform — used differently by different people.
Some use it as a way to keep in touch with their professional network. Others use it to look for new job opportunities or find clients for their freelance business.
If you want to become a freelance writer, you absolutely need to update your LinkedIn profile. Of course, there are some key elements that should be included in every profile. (We’ll talk about those in just a minute.) But the thing that truly makes your profile stand out is how you present yourself as a writer. If you want to get more freelance writing jobs, your profile needs to make it clear why someone would hire you as a writer or editor and not another person with similar qualifications.
12. Start With The Low-Hanging Fruit
If you’re hesitant to take the leap into full-time freelancing, start with the low-hanging fruit. This can be anything from a couple of hours after work to just one day a week.
When you first begin writing for clients, you’ll want to focus on completing small tasks for low pay. It’s not ideal, but it’s what most new freelancers do.
Writing isn’t as simple as typing words into a document. You have to understand different styles and tones, what each client is looking for, and how to make your writing clear and easy to understand.
You will get better over time, but it won’t happen overnight.
Once you have some freelance writing experience under your belt, you can begin pitching larger companies with bigger budgets. Until then, it pays (literally) to start small and work your way up.
13. Build A Portfolio
A portfolio is essential when it comes to getting freelance writing jobs. As a freelancer, there is no way for a potential client to see your past work unless you showcase it yourself. When creating your portfolio, only add pieces that are relevant to your niche and showcase the type of content you want to be hired for.
Building a portfolio is the most important thing you can do as a freelance writer. I’m not talking about one of those fancy-schmancy websites you see some people have. I’m talking about a simple blog that showcases your writing skills.
Here’s how you can build your blog:
Pick a topic. Random rants are never going to get you any clients, so pick something that makes sense for your goals as a writer. If you’re interested in blogging, write a blog! If you want to become a freelancer for financial publications, write about personal finance.
Find an audience. Find communities on Reddit or other social media platforms where people ask questions related to your topic and answer them. By establishing yourself as an expert in the field, people are more likely to turn to you when they need expert advice in the form of a written piece.
If you’re looking for freelance writing jobs for beginners, this is the best way to go about it! It doesn’t take much time and it’s free (aside from hosting costs). Once you have some great examples of your work, put them all together in one place so you can show them off to potential clients.
14. Practice, Practice, Practice!
It is important to set up a schedule for your freelance writing career. If you have been struggling with the idea of becoming a freelance writer for a long time, you may be tempted to start writing for free. This will not help you in the long run because you will lose your motivation very quickly.
Once you have decided that you want to become a freelance writer, try to find some small projects that pay very little money. The more experience you have in the industry, the more valuable your work will become.
Writing articles is not just about getting paid; it is also about how much effort you put into each article. If you are not sure whether or not your content is worth paying for, then it may be time to look at another option.
15. Networking With Other Writers
You can also network with other writers and build relationships with them. Most of the time, these relationships aren’t a waste of your time, and you can help each other out.
For example, I have a friend named Johnny who’s a freelance writer too. He’s currently in the middle of a relationship with another freelance writer named Carol.
When Johnny was assigned to an article where he had to interview someone, Carol recommended him to her friend who has an online course that teaches people how to become better writers.
It wasn’t until several weeks later that Johnny realized that Carol did that for him because she wanted him to cover her personal finance blog for a week while she went on vacation.
But that’s not all!
Carol also asked Johnny if he knew any good copywriter because she needed one. Johnny introduced his cousin Steve (who had just started freelancing) to Carol, and they worked together on some projects over the past few months.
16. Join Some Relevant Facebook Groups
There are a lot of Facebook groups for freelance writers, so search for some and join. These, as well as Twitter hashtags, can be a great place to talk with other freelance writers and to ask questions.
Also, be sure to follow your favorite writing blogs and websites on social media. You can also use the “follow” feature on Medium.
Now that you’re following these people, pay attention to what they share. What do they discuss? What do they retweet? What kinds of articles do they write? What kinds of articles do they share?
These are all things that will give you a good idea of what kind of work is expected of you when you want to become a freelance writer.
Some of my favorite Facebook groups for finding freelance writing jobs include:
Freelance Writers Den – This private group has thousands of members. Members submit jobs and share tips for success. The admin team is really on top of flagging spam posts. This is one of the only groups I personally recommend paying for (it’s $25/month).
Freelance Writing Jobs – This is an open group, with over 100K members. There are lots of job posts, but also a lot of spammy requests too. It can be overwhelming, but there are some good gigs posted here from time to time.
Buyers and Sellers Club – This is a large group with over 90k members that mostly focus on copywriting jobs and SEO. The group isn’t as active as the other two, but I still find good gigs occasionally here.
The Writer’s Job Board – This is another open group, with over 40K members. There are lots of job posts, and it’s free to join!
17. Decide Your Freelancing Rates
The first thing you need to do is decide what your rates will be. This can be the most challenging part of becoming a freelance writer. How much do you charge? I’ll start by saying that there are many different factors that go into figuring out your freelancing rates.
What kind of writing are you offering?
Are you offering ghostwriting services, blog writing, website copy, SEO copy, or something else entirely?
How long have you been a writer?
If you’re just starting out as a writer and don’t have any clients yet, then you might want to consider offering your services at lower rates than more experienced writers. When you first begin freelancing, it can be difficult to land clients because no one knows who you are. Offering your services at a lower rate is an easy way to get your foot in the door with new clients until you build up some experience and credibility.
Who are your potential clients?
Before deciding what your freelance writing rates will be, take some time to research who your potential clients are and how much they typically pay for the type of writing that you’re offering.

How Much Do Freelance Writers Make?
Whether you’re freelancing full-time or just supplementing your income, you might be wondering how much money you can make as a freelancer.
The answer is, it depends. Freelance writers charge different rates. Some charge by the hour and others charge by the word or project. It all depends on what type of freelance writing services they offer, what their experience is, and who they’re working for.
Some writers work for content mills, which pay low amounts per article but don’t require much experience. Others have worked as journalists, editors, or communications professionals and have more experience in the field.
