If you want to be comfortable in transit and arrive feeling refreshed but can’t afford business class tickets, I recommend flying out during the day rather than overnight (if possible).
The difference between sleeping on a plane versus at home is that when you wake up in your bed, it’s usually time to get up anyway you don’t have to think about what time zone or location you’re in!
But when waking up on a plane after having slept most of the way there (and if possible, arriving at your destination), these additional factors suddenly become important.
#5: Go To Places Where The Locals Don’t Have Cell Phones
In the spirit of “go local,” here’s another way to get off the grid and make sure your phone doesn’t follow you: when you’re in Europe, stay away from tourist spots. This means going to museums and restaurants where locals go (and not just because they’ll be cheaper).
It also means that if you’re staying in hotels or hostels, avoid those near popular tourist attractions if possible. It’s hard enough finding quality places that don’t have cell service but add in the fact that most people who work at hotels and hostels speak very little English.
Not only will it be difficult for them to check you in without getting frustrated with their broken English skills and/or lack of computer access (which they probably also don’t have).
But out of courtesy, they might use their own phones or tablets so they can communicate with other staff members who speak English fluently.

One of my favorite things to do on vacation is visit museums and castles. I love learning about history, and there’s nothing better than walking around reading old artifacts and learning about what life was like hundreds or even thousands of years ago.
But here’s the thing: museums are free! And you can go into them as many times as you want! That means that if you plan your trip right, you can hit up a bunch of museums/castles for absolutely no cost at all.
The best part is that there are plenty of places in Europe where both museums and castles are easily accessible from one another. For example, when we were traveling through Belgium on our way through Europe last year (and staying with some friends).
We visited the Groeninge Museum in Bruges a museum dedicated to the Flemish history and then spent two hours wandering around Castle Burgherschans first thing in the morning before it opened for its usual array of guided tours.
Just make sure to check which ones have free admission days (or free entry every day) so that you don’t miss out on anything while planning your trip!
#7: Don’t Buy Souvenirs, Or Even Books You’ve Never Heard Of
Don’t buy souvenirs or even books you’ve never heard of. If you’re at a flea market and there’s no English-language book section, don’t take home an antique copy of “The Complete Works of Shakespeare” or a leather-bound copy of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.”
You can find these books for cheap online or in the States, plus they’ll be in your native language and format. The same goes for those gorgeous ceramics from Japan they’re beautiful but heavy and expensive to ship back home.
Buy gifts for friends and family members instead of yourself. This won’t leave you with as many reminders that spending money on travel is hard work (or maybe it will?).
#8: Keep Your Money In A Plastic Bag And Keep It In Your Pocket Until You Get Back Home
If you’re traveling with a lot of cash, it will be best to keep it in a plastic bag and carry it with you at all times. This will protect your money, but also help prevent theft.
After all, if someone sees that you have lots of money on hand and wants to steal it from you, they might try to trick or intimidate you into giving them the money.
By keeping your cash on your person instead of leaving it in the hotel room or car where thieves can get at it easily, they’ll have no choice but to resort to violence – which means there’s less chance that anything bad will happen!
