As a life-long interior designer, I’ve seen a lot of trends come and go. So, as you can imagine, I am always very excited to see what’s new in the design world. With that said, I’m also very happy to see some of my favorite trends stick around for years! 

One trend that has really stuck around is using social media platforms to showcase your work and yourself to potential clients. You might think it sounds intimidating at first but don’t worry: there are many ways to get started with social media marketing as an interior designer!

Have An Online Presence

There are many ways you can show your online presence, including:

Create a website and make sure it is properly optimized for search engines. You can even add content that shows off your portfolio and work history so people searching for designers in your area will find you.

Create a profile on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is great because it allows people to see how well connected you are, which helps them see how much influence and pull they’ll have with hiring managers if they hire you!

Create a blog or podcast so that potential employers can see what kind of content you create. If they like what they see, then maybe they’ll decide to hire you!

Consider A Formal Education

If you’re looking to land a job in the field of interior design, consider getting a degree in the subject. 

A degree can help you get hired faster, get hired for higher-paying jobs and with more responsibility, give you access to more benefits and perks associated with working in an office environment (like health insurance), and help establish your credibility as an expert in your field.

Assuming that you have all or most of these things covered already (you’ve got some experience under your belt and/or do freelance work on the side).

Turning your attention to education is certainly worth considering if it means improving your chances of getting hired by an established firm or starting on your own as an independent designer.

Accessorize Your Portfolio

When you’re ready to show your portfolio, it must look its best. To do this, you need a portfolio case that will keep everything in order and look professional. There are several different types of cases available:

  • Portfolio cases come in many different shapes and sizes, so make sure you measure the right one for your needs before purchasing.
  • You’ll also want to consider whether or not you’d like a clear front pocket on the front of your case so visitors can see what is inside while they look at it.
  • Finally, pick a color scheme that works best with the items you want to display inside, and avoid red if they’re mostly blueprints!

Research And Network!

As you begin your search, remember to look for other designers in your area and ask them for referrals. 

You can also find out who the best designers are by checking out online lists; some of these will be from organizations like NARI (National Association of Remodelers), while others may be LinkedIn or Yelp accounts that feature reviews from past clients.

If you’re able to speak with someone personally, ask them about their experiences as both a designer and an employee. Did they start as an intern? Did they go back to school? How did they get their first job? 

What advice would they give you? And what recommendations would they give their clients if they were asked this same question?

However, when dealing with career opportunities during an application or interview stage, confidence is key! 

Do whatever you need to do (even if it’s just telling yourself) so that when someone asks what makes you special as an interior designer candidate they know they’re getting the real deal from start to finish!

Be willing to take risks and learn from mistakes made along the way but don’t let them discourage progress toward achieving goals related specifically *and only* those who care enough about personal growth/development will succeed long-term.”

Have An Eye For Detail

You need to have an eye for detail. This is one of the most important aspects of interior design and something that sets you apart from other designers.

The difference between an average designer and a great one is often their ability to spot what matters in a room, even if it’s not obvious at first glance. 

An aspiring interior designer needs to be able to look beyond color combinations or furniture arrangements they need to understand how every single element comes together as part of a whole space.

If you’re a detail-oriented person who enjoys analyzing things, this might just be your calling! 

Your eye for detail can shine through in your portfolio by showing off some beautifully executed pieces (like choosing the perfect paint color), but it’s also important that you make sure those details are visible in real life as well.

Look around next time you’re at home or work: what aspects do people notice first? Is there anything out of place? 

You might want to pay attention next time someone asks why they love something about your space; if they mention something specific like its lighting scheme or material selection (for example).

Use these moments as opportunities for self-reflection so that you’ll know where things went right (and wrong).

If you want to make it in this business, it’s important to show off all your talents. This can be done by adding new skills to your resume that aren’t directly related to interior design but are still relevant. 

For example, if you’re a master at making delicious soufflés, throw that on there! Or if you have an uncanny ability to tell the time just by looking at someone’s face, list that too. 

Just make sure these skills are relevant don’t list “wiping noses” when what they want is “designing buildings.”

Find The Right Company

Here are the steps you should take to find the right company:

Ask for referrals from friends and family. If someone you know has had a positive experience with a company, that’s an excellent place to start.

Do your research online. Type “interior design reviews” into Google (or your preferred search engine) and see what comes up! You can also check out sites like Yelp, Angie’s List, or CitySearch for more information about individual firms in your area.

Ask for a list of references from potential employers. The best way to get unbiased feedback about whether a company is good or not is by asking those who have worked there before and who have moved on because they were happy with their experience there! 

You don’t need names or contact information; just ask if they’ll give you some names so that you can ask them questions directly rather than relying on secondhand opinions alone and make sure it’s okay with them first!

Pinpoint A Specific Field Of Interest

It’s important to know the difference between an interior designer and a decorator. An interior designer is someone who plans and organizes home interiors, while a decorator does not have formal training in this field. 

An architect is also different from an interior designer since architects are only involved in building design, while interior designers can work on both residential and commercial projects.

A construction manager works closely with architects and engineers during a project, but they do not typically use CAD software or draw up blueprints themselves as an engineer would do. 

Additionally, it’s important to know that there are various types of engineering careers (civil engineers design bridges, mechanical engineers build machines).

Sell Yourself With Data

You might think that interior designers are only concerned with aesthetics, but in today’s world, they’re also expected to be experts in other areas. 

Showing your ability to help the company’s bottom line and environment is a great way for employers to see what you can contribute when you aren’t working on design projects.

Use data from your previous work experience and research studies that show how successful companies have used design elements to improve their business. 

For example, if you worked at a restaurant chain that uses neon signs and industrial lighting fixtures as décor elements, including photos of how these items visually affect customers’ perceptions about the quality of food served there. 

If a company wants more customers but has limited resources for advertising campaigns, show examples of inexpensive ways (like creating chalkboard menus) where design can help attract new clientele without breaking bank accounts or denting profits too much.

Knowing your numbers is essential to your success. It’s not enough to know how much you need to make ends meet, or even how much you need to retire. You also have to know exactly what those figures are and how they relate to each other. 

For example, if you want to save $1,000 a month for retirement but only earn $4,000 a month at your current job, then it’s going to take far longer than working until 65 years old before retiring.

This will vary from person-to-person depending on their lifestyle choices and savings goals. 

But once you figure out how much money goes into all areas of your life rent/mortgage payments, food bills, and entertainment costs you can start prioritizing which expenses are most important based on what they bring back in return (for example: buying organic vegetables gets me healthier meals).

Understand The Job Market In Your Area

The first thing you should do is to understand the job market in your area. The job market in other areas.

Or countries may be very different from yours, and even the industry you are applying for may have a completely different type of company structure and workflow than what you’re used to.

So how do you find out about the current state of the local job market? Read newspapers, magazines, and online publications that report on issues related to your industry (for example [link]( 

Look at websites like Monster and LinkedIn, which often have sections dedicated exclusively to trending jobs in various industries as well as tips on how best to get hired by them

Make A Name For Yourself As A Leader In Design Trends

It’s important to understand that the best way to stand out in your field is to be a leader in design trends. 

Every industry has its own set of leaders and laggards, but when you’re just starting and trying to get noticed, it can help if you show your potential by leading the way with new ideas and techniques.

When people look at your work, they should see something that makes them say “wow,” or even better: “I didn’t know someone could do that!” It’s also important for them to know who did it so they can start looking out for more of their work!

Take Advantage Of Training Opportunities

Training is a great way to improve your skills, and there are many ways you can do it. Some training may be available through the company, or you might learn from an instructor in person or online. Training can be formal or informal, paid or unpaid the possibilities are endless!

If you’re not sure where to start with this type of research, it’s helpful to ask around among other designers at work (or even your friends and family) who might give you recommendations based on their own experiences.

The person giving you feedback must have no fear of being honest with you. If they do, they will probably sugarcoat their criticism and not tell you what’s wrong with your design.

It’s also important that the person giving you feedback trusts both your abilities and intentions enough to be able to give constructive criticism without feeling like he or she might hurt your feelings or damage their relationship with you.

Asking someone who doesn’t have much experience in interior design may result in them having no idea what type of advice could help improve your work.

And asking someone who works at a different company than yours might cause conflicts between bosses if one of them doesn’t agree with whatever suggestions were made by an outside source (this would be especially true if those bosses aren’t always on good terms).


Here’s a final tip for you: make sure to take the time to do your research. The internet is full of resources, but nothing beats hearing from someone who has been there before. If possible, talk to someone who works in the field that interests you and ask them questions. 

It doesn’t have to be a mentor just someone who can give their perspective on what it’s like working in this field!
