Freelancing Has Brought My Career To New Heights

I used to work in an office, and my job was secure. I had a steady paycheck, benefits, and a decent 401(k) to look forward to. But something was missing. Sometimes I wondered if I would spend the rest of my life glued to the same office chair doing the same tasks every day.

I really wanted to be independent and work on my own terms. That’s when my boyfriend suggested that I become a freelance data analyst. He’s also done some freelancing, so he could give me some great advice about it.

It took me a little while to get started, but once I jumped in, it was amazing!

I Used To Work As A Data Analyst For An International Law Firm

I used to work as a data analyst for an international law firm. I worked in a large office with a lot of other people, and it was great I got to do a variety of projects and had some autonomy over my schedule.

But after three years of working there, I decided that I wanted to be more independent and work on my terms.

I started freelancing full-time in September 2017, when I first joined Upwork as one of its first contractors.

Since then, my career has taken off! It’s been amazing seeing just how much freelancing has allowed me to grow professionally and personally as well as helped fund many trips around the world (seriously).

My Job Was Secure And The Pay Was Good, But I Felt Like Something Was Missing

As a freelancer, I’ve been able to work on projects that are meaningful to me and make a difference in people’s lives. I’m doing what I love and learning new skills every day.

I was bored at my job. My job was secure and the pay was good, but I didn’t feel challenged by my work anymore and that’s when I started thinking about freelancing.

From the very beginning of my career in engineering, I knew that there had to be something more out there for me than just being an engineer for the rest of my life!

Sometimes I Wondered If I Would Spend My Whole Life Working In The Same Office Doing The Same Tasks Every Day

I had been working in the same office for 13 years. The same tasks, the same people, the same routine. I was not sure if this was how my life would always be and I often wondered if I would spend my whole life working in the same place doing the same work.

But freelancing has brought me to new heights and opened up opportunities that I never imagined possible before.

I Wanted To Be Independent And Work On My Terms

I really wanted to be independent and work on my own terms. I felt like being a freelancer would help me do that better than working as an employee. I could set my schedule, choose projects based on what interested me most, and work from home.

The benefits of freelancing have been amazing so far!

That’s When My Boyfriend Suggested That I Become A Freelance Data Analyst

That’s when my boyfriend suggested that I become a freelance data analyst. He had done some freelancing before and said it was easy money.

He told me I could work wherever I wanted, whenever I wanted and make enough money to keep myself busy while still being independent of an office environment.

In addition, there were other benefits: no more commuting or sitting in traffic, no more waiting in line at the water cooler for lunch or coffee breaks (that sounds much better than sitting around chatting with coworkers).

And no more feeling like you’re wasting your life away sitting at a desk for eight hours per day doing busywork…and so on!

He’s Also Done Some Freelancing, So He Could Give Me Some Great Advice About It

His experience has been mostly in software development, and he’s made a killing doing that for over two years now.

He’s been freelancing for about six months now, but with all the knowledge he’s amassed during his time as a full-time employee and contractor, I was sure that he’d have something useful to say on the subject.

It Took Me A Little While To Get Started, But Once I Jumped In, It Was Amazing

I had never been a freelancer before, so I didn’t have any clients or referrals. My first few months were spent learning how to write great content and build my portfolio of work samples.

This took time and some trial and error but as my skills improved, so did my confidence level as a writer.

Once I had built up my portfolio and learned how to market myself effectively (both online and offline), I began getting more jobs right away and eventually landed some regular clients that continue working with me today!

Now I Can Take On Projects That Interest Me And Still Have The Flexibility To Go Anywhere Or Do Anything At Any Time

As a freelancer, you get to decide who you work with and what kind of projects you take on. You can choose to start your own business or work for someone else. Either way, it’s up to you!

These days, I work as an independent contractor for three clients at once (which makes me feel like I have my own little team).

I pick my hours, set my deadlines  everything! And even though we don’t sit at the same desk every day, we are all still part of the same company and working towards similar goals. The only difference? We do it from different locations around the world.

Once You’ve Made Up Your Mind To Freelance, Here Are Some Tips On How To Get Started

You have to be ready to work hard. Freelancing is not easy, but if you’re willing to put in the time and effort, you’ll reap rewards.

Here are some tips on how to get started:

Make sure your portfolio is up-to-date and professional. You don’t need a fancy website or expensive marketing materials; a basic website will do fine for now (you can always upgrade later).

But make sure it displays your best work and make sure that everything in the portfolio is 100% original! It’s important for potential clients to see what kind of quality they can expect from working with you.

Create a business plan outlining your goals and strategies for achieving them. This will help keep things organized as well as give an overview of everything involved with managing a freelance gig business.

The more specific detail goes into this document, the better! It’s also helpful when talking about pricing models so clients understand why some projects cost more than others or how much time they’ll need before starting work on something new together.”

1) Identify Your Skillset

It is important to identify your skillset because you are probably already a good freelancer. It’s more than just typing and editing; it’s about being able to take an idea and run with it, which is something that most people have the ability to do.

To determine what kind of freelancing opportunities are available for you, start by thinking about what you do well and enjoy doing.

This can be anything from playing an instrument or writing poetry, to knowing how to fix cars or build websites. If there’s something that comes naturally to you, chances are there are people out there who would pay for the service or product that comes along with those talents!

2) Decide What Type Of Freelancer You Want To Be

Now that you have a sense of the many different types of jobs available, it’s time to decide which one is right for you. Are you more interested in working with data or writing? Designing websites or designing interfaces?

Maybe web development is more your thing! Or maybe photography and videography are more up your alleys.

Whatever your skill set may be, there’s sure to be a niche where they’re needed and if not, it’s never been easier to start building those skills on the side while working full-time.

As I mentioned earlier, I’m currently focusing on copywriting and content marketing (specifically SEO copywriting), but my career started as an analyst at an investment bank in New York City.

While I loved being able to work from home after moving across the country from Texas without having to uproot my family again, there were some drawbacks: namely that our firm didn’t allow any remote employees (and still doesn’t).

3) Build Your Portfolio And Make Sure That It Highlights Your Best Work

By now, you should have a website and a portfolio. These two things go hand-in-hand. However, don’t just make sure that your website is good. Make sure it highlights the best work you’ve done.

If there’s one thing that I wish I would’ve done more of early on when I started freelancing, it would be putting together better portfolios for my clients to browse through and see what my work looks like.

As far as social media goes? Make sure that everything is professional but also fun! You don’t want people to think they’re working with an annoying robot who doesn’t know how to have fun outside of work hours (even though they are).

So show off some personality while staying professional at all times!

Writing can be a powerful outlet for freelancers, improving their mental well-being and overall work-life balance. Dive into the positive impact of freelance writing on mental health in our article on how writing positively influences freelancers’ mental health.

4) Create A Website With Contact Information And Examples Of Your Work

After you’ve considered what you want to say about yourself and your business, it’s time to create a website that showcases all of your hard work. I highly recommend using Wix as a platform for creating your website because it has everything you need:

Free templates, easy-to-navigate formatting options, the contact information on every page, and even analytics tools so that you can see how many people are viewing each post.

If this sounds like too much work for the average freelancer or if you aren’t sure whether or not there’s a market for someone with your skillset there are other ways of getting people interested in hiring you.

For example, if I wanted to teach someone how to write well (which I do), I could set up shop at local libraries or coffee shops where people gather regularly.

5) Make Sure You Have Enough Savings To Support Yourself Until Your Career Takes Off

While freelancing, it’s important to have a strong working knowledge of budgeting and financial management. You should be able to anticipate your expenses and know how much money you need in order to live comfortably at home (or wherever else).

If you don’t already have an idea of what kind of lifestyle costs will cost where you’re moving, now is the time to do some research on that front.

You can use a tool like Mint or another financial app to keep track of all your spending habits so that it’s easier for you when determine how much money goes into savings each month.

Many websites offer advice on how much money one should save as well as helpful tips on how they did it themselves.

The more prepared and knowledgeable about personal finance issues such as these before starting freelancing full-time, the better off we’ll all be!
